Plowshares’ Play Submission Policy

Plowshares Theatre Company seeks to partner with African-American playwrights in developing and producing new work. Towards that end, we maintain the New Griots Initiative. Click here for additional information on that program.

In the event a playwright is not interested in play development, we maintain as close to an open submission policy as our resources permit.

We seek plays that have not been previously produced or optioned by other organizations. Translations and adaptations are not accepted. Authors may send in as many scripts as they wish but only one per playwright will be chosen.

When submitting a play, please bear in mind that our usual cast size ranges from 2 to 6 actors. Occasionally, we produce one-person shows as well as plays with casts larger than 6.
Our audiences come to Plowshares for engaging stories, compelling characters, and ideas.

NOTE: Only plays directly addressing African-American life or the African-American experience will be considered.

All playwrights are invited to submit the following materials:

1. A synopsis of the play, including a casting/character breakdown
2. A 10-page sample
3. A resume or biography

You will be contacted if we would like to read the full play.
Agents and artistic directors are welcome to contact us to submit full scripts for consideration.

All submissions and inquiries should be made electronically and addressed to: newgriots@plowsharestheatre.org

Finally, please use ‘Play Submission’ as the subject of your email.
